Chi ha paura…? Global Identity exhibition, Salone Del Mobile Milano 2013

HOKO has recently been invited to design a piece of jewellery for the new collection of Chi ha paura…? , Global Identity, under the Art Direction of Gijs Bakker (NL).

Global Identity

For millennia jewelry has acted as symbol and signifier of a wearers identity. We broadcast our status, affiliations, and beliefs through adornment. In what way does a global perspective change not only what we put on the body but also what we make for the body? How does the idea of global affect our personal, cultural, and national identities?

Designers and artists from different continents were invited to think about these questions and to design a new piece of jewelry that might show our global identity, or that reflects on global issues.

Today, the role of an index finger’s tip has superseded that of the opposable thumb.
The global gesture of swiping and clicking is one that unifies us in acknowledgement of technological advancement. To protect one’s fingertip is not an act of paranoia, but a calculated anticipation of society’s shifting perspective upon our evolving anatomy.

INDEX RING is a form of fingertip protection that should be removed only when using digital interfaces that require the fingertip’s participation. Should the wearer wish to press a lift button or switch on the lights in the bedroom, we recommend the middle finger or the outdated thumb….

Our little concept books on ‘arrangement’ are currently stocked at Yvon Lambert gallery / bookshop in Paris.

Founded in 1966 by the art dealer and collector Yvon Lambert, the gallery has a strong tradition of presenting artists’ projects that are ambitious, intense, and innovative. Starting in the early 70′s Yvon Lambert boldly chose to present American artists, pioneers of minimal art, conceptual art, and land art such as Carl Andre, Robert Barry, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Brice Marden, Robert Ryman, Cy Twombly, Lawrence Weiner, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Niele Toroni (…)

シンガポールでatlier hokoを運営し、現在はヨーロッパ各地での展覧会キュレーターとしても活躍するhokoのふたり。日常にあるあらゆるものとデザインの関係を探りながら、新しいデザインのかたちをつくっています。「東京アートブックフェア」で来日した二人が、百年を訪れてくれたことをきっかけにhokoのzineを扱うことになりました。おそらく日本で買えるのは百年だけ。彼らの事が気になる方はぜひぜひHPもチェックしてみてください。

U N - E X P E C T E D , an exhibition.

U N - E X P E C T E D

is an approach that brings forth the tacit relationships formed between people and ordinary objects in our immediate surroundings. It questions our predetermined expectations for certain sequence of events to occur. We expect a vase to be broken when dropped, a container to contain, and a handle sturdy enough to allow us to perform the necessary actions. Nestled within the familiar everyday, we are gradually losing our sense of curiosity towards these seemingly mundane tasks, actions and objects.

In the Design Concepts Module, the third year (15 years old) SOTA students from the Faculty of Visual Arts were invited to investigate the notions behind an Un-graspable Handle, an Un-containable Container and an Un-breakable Vase. The emphasis of this exercise is on the thinking process; how students approach the brief, ask and formulate fundamental questions leading to meaningful explorations from within.

Through this exhibition, we wish to share the findings and interpretations from the students’ inquiries into our everyday expectations of the un-expected.

Directed by Alvin Ho and Clara Koh.

Super Sincere Sentiments
by H O K O

The whole gesture of sending a mass-produced store-bought greeting card is irrevocably insincere. Thousands of people all over the world receiving and sending the very same card containing graphics by some unknown illustrator , accompanied with text written by an equally anonymous copywriter is a strange but real phenomenon. The intention of this design is simply to unmask and articulate this insincerity. Therefore, one can say that the cards are extremely honest in being ‘insincere’.

H O K O has recently been invited to design a series of greeting cards for Apostrophe S, a product-making and distributing process of local creative organization FARM.

A range of 40 products were developed for the Singapore Art Museum and are available for sale. They are all on exhibition at the inner lobby of Singapore Art Museum (SAM) till 26th Dec following which they will be shifted to another location within the museum.

TRANSMISSION: EXPERIENCE creates an outlet for telling and circulating stories and interpretations materializing through art and design. Whether involving mental, physical or virtual, a dredged- up or residual memory of an experience will continue to reside in one’s mind. Through examining the extraction, conservation and continuation of personal stories and memories to be preserved for posterity, memories are temporarily made tangible in this exhibition. Drawing upon the common theme that characterize our existence and shape lives, it aptly sets the stage for what brings together diversity- experiences.

We Sink Ships (WSS) is a collaboration featuring Heidi Kuisma, a Finnish, Glasgow based photographer and Neil Milton, a Scottish photographer, musician and record label owner living in Warsaw in Poland. Together they create and curate online photo exhibitions and present We Sink Ships Radio, a series of weekly podcasts hosted on Radio Magnetic, an online radio station dedicated to quality, underground, independent, alternative music and one of the UK’s top five internet radio stations since it began in early 2001.

We Sink Ships Gallery was born of a desire to showcase and promote work by talented and zealous emerging photographers from around the world. In their selection process for images and now also for poetry, We Sink Ships, being completely self tought themselves, values passion over education and enthusiasm over expensive equipment; you don’t have to be an art school graduate or own the latest camera to be included in one of the exhibitions.
